All employees are different: some love brainstorming sessions and can’t imagine their life without an office, while others like to work alone and quickly get tired of general meetings. In order to create a productive team from different people and find suitable motivators for each, try using the Myers-Briggs personality typology (MBTI) — we talk about the key principles in our article.
The essence of the MBTI theory is that the structure of any person’s psyche can be described using four descriptors.
By assessing an employee on each point and creating a unique combination of preferences - for example, INFP, you can predict their inclinations in professional activities, style in solving problems and other features. Let's consider the meaning of each descriptor separately.
E/I (extroverts/introverts)
Extroverts cannot imagine their life without social media marketing service communication: negotiating with clients, conducting negotiations, presenting ideas is their strong point. They love meetings, business trips and gatherings, and remote work is a difficult test for them. At work, they show themselves well in brainstorming sessions and at meetings with a large audience.
Introverts are reserved and aloof, preferring to work in small groups in a quiet environment. They are most productive when working at home or in a private office space. They do well with research or analysis tasks that do not require immediate decisions.
S/N (sensors/intuitives)
Sensors are precise and consistent, value transparency in work and only verified facts. Clarity in tasks and a clear description of the result are important to them; generalizations and ideas based on fantasy are difficult to come by. They are attentive to details and always look for a practical solution.
Intuitives are good at finding non-obvious connections and hidden contexts, they have well-developed abstract thinking, and their strong point is creativity and self-expression. They have a developed imagination and do not recognize formalities, rules and frameworks. If for a sensory person an oak tree is bark, leaves and roots, then for an intuitive person it is a symbol of longevity and strength.
Logicians are objective and critical, they analyze information well and make rational decisions. They are not very good at working with emotions and managing people. But they easily interact with numbers and programs, they love to look for ways out of difficult situations.
Ethics have innate empathy and developed emotional intelligence, they feel people well, know how to establish contact, resolve conflicts and manage a team. Often, it is they who are approached for support and asking for help. They manage to build communications at a deep level.
J/P (rationals/irrationals)
Rationals like to plan and calculate everything in advance, they adore instructions and algorithms. Stability and order in everything are important to them, unexpected changes and chaos simply kill them. They are excellent at moving according to schedule and confidently moving towards their goals.
Irrationals are very flexible, can quickly adapt to difficult situations and cope well with urgent tasks. They can multitask, turn any process into a game and prefer spontaneity over order.
Let's look at one of the possible combinations - INFP: a person of this type tends to defend the values of the team, his strong point is the ability to manage employees so that they do not feel it at all. However, it is difficult for him to express his opinion, which is contrary to the views of colleagues. In case of conflicts or a tense situation, he may feel anxious.
